As part of the Google Workspace May feature update, Gmail has received a new artificial intelligence (AI)-powered functionality. The Mountain View-based software behemoth has announced that it would provide summary cards in emails that are either extremely long or are part of a protracted email thread. These summary cards will show at the top of the email to give consumers with context regarding the content, and they are created by Gemini AI. The most recent version also includes new AI tools for Google Chat, Google Docs, and Google Meet.
Gmail now displays AI summaries automatically
According to the firm, Google Workspace users with active subscriptions will now view email summaries in a new format on Gmail. Previously, users had to open an email and press the Gemini symbol to get an AI-generated summary of the specific email or thread.
With the latest version, Gemini will intelligently detect emails that require a summary and display it in a summary card at the top of the email. When individuals react to the discussion, the summary is instantly refreshed. In addition, users can collapse the summary card if they believe it is unnecessary.
Google Chat is also receiving a few new features. Gemini will now summarize messages on Chat's main page, allowing users to realize which messages deserve rapid attention. This function is accessible in English, Spanish, and six other languages.
Gemini can also analyze and summarize the content of a shared Workspace file. So, if a colleague sends a Doc or Slide, the user may view a synopsis on the side panel before opening the document.
Google Docs is also receiving a new AI tool called the summary building block. When Gemini creates a summary for a document, users may place it at the top to help people grasp the context before diving deeper. Every time the document is modified, the summary may be refreshed to display the most recent version.
The company has also announced new dynamic layouts for Google Meet, allowing users to select between "room" and "individual" tiles. The room tile is appropriate for using a single device to display several participants, whereas the individual tile concentrates on a single participant's face.
