Apple will preview iOS 26 instead of iOS 19
It has long been speculated that Apple's operating systems will undergo significant upgrades this year. However, whereas this was traditionally assumed to apply to the basic design or functioning, the shift may begin with the name itself. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the Cupertino-based tech company may shift from an iteration-based to a year-based method for naming OS releases.
This might mean that OS upgrades will be identified by the year they are released rather than a version number, according to the writer, who cited unnamed insiders acquainted with the plans. As a result, iOS 19 is projected to be dubbed iOS 26, iPadOS 19 will be iPadOS 26, macOS 16 may be macOS 26, and so on. According to reports, the corporation would name its firmware versions after the following year rather than the current one.
The following replacements of Apple's upgrades are expected to be unveiled at WWDC 2025:
Notably, Apple's OS upgrades are accompanied by distinct versions because they were not released simultaneously. Thus, iOS 18 is the most recent version for the iPhone, whereas macOS 15 is included with all Mac machines. Meanwhile, the newly released Apple Vision Pro utilizes the visionOS 2 firmware. Thus, Apple is claimed to be making this adjustment to provide "consistency to its branding" and to eliminate a naming strategy that might be confusing to both users and developers.
This modification, along with all of the improvements, is planned to be demonstrated at the WWDC 2025 keynote on June 9.
